Pregnancy changed my feet – here’s my recommendation for fall outdoor mom shoes that support my fallen arches, keep my feet dry, go with every outfit and keep my feet comfortable for long days out with the kids.

I’m a North Carolina mom of three boys who spends countless hours at trails, parks, sports fields and outdoor adventures. I only recommend products I’ve personally used, thoroughly researched, or would confidently buy for my own family.
My Top Fall Outdoor Mom Shoes Pick

Great support without needing insoles, keeps your feet dry, prevents foot pain for long days.
Fall in North Carolina is one of my favorite times to be outside—but getting dressed for it can be tricky. A 45-degree morning can turn into a 75-degree afternoon, and if you’re heading to a soccer tournament, hiking trail, pumpkin patch, or fall festival, you might be outside for hours.
And then there is the dew.
If you’ve ever spent a Saturday morning standing on a wet soccer field, you know that cold, damp socks can ruin an otherwise perfect day. That’s why when I know I’m going to be walking a lot or spending time outside on wet trails and fields, I reach for my waterproof Oboz hiking shoes.
Mine are about five years old, and they have become one of those pieces of outdoor gear that I don’t really think about anymore—I just grab them because I know my feet are going to be comfortable and dry.
Why Fall Is the Perfect Time for a Good Pair of Hiking Shoes
Fall outdoor activities aren’t always technically “hiking.”
Sometimes you’re actually hiking.
Other times you’re:
- Walking miles around a soccer or baseball tournament
- Crossing a wet field before the first game of the day
- Chasing kids through a pumpkin patch
- Walking around a fall festival
- Exploring a nature center
- Taking the long way around a park
- Walking a trail with your kids
- Crossing a creek or shallow stream
- Spending an entire Saturday outside
That is why I think of these as outdoor mom shoes, not just hiking shoes.
I need something that can handle a trail but doesn’t feel ridiculous when I’m wearing them to a kids’ sporting event.

My Go-To Waterproof Hiking Shoes
My pair is the Oboz Sawtooth X Low Waterproof Hiking Shoes. I’ve had mine for about five years, so the exact model and colors you find today may look a little different from mine—but the pair I own has held up incredibly well.

What I love about my fall outdoor mom shoes:
- Waterproof: This is probably my favorite feature for fall in North Carolina.
- Comfortable for long days: I can walk for hours without wishing I had chosen different shoes.
- Great on wet grass: Perfect for those chilly, dewy mornings at sports fields.
- Good for hiking: They give me the support and traction I want when we’re actually on a trail.
- Stream-crossing friendly: When a hike involves crossing a shallow stream, I don’t have to panic about immediately soaking my socks.
- Durable: I’ve had my pair for roughly five years, and they have earned their place in my outdoor rotation.
And honestly, five years of use is a pretty good endorsement from a mom who actually wears her outdoor gear.

The Wet Grass Test – LOL!
This might sound like a small thing, but if you have kids in fall sports, you know how important this is.
The first game of the day might start when the grass is still covered in dew. Everyone else is standing around in sneakers wondering why their feet are freezing while I’m pretty happy in my waterproof hiking shoes.
That’s one of the reasons I reach for these instead of regular athletic shoes when I know I’m going to be outside early.
Wet grass + cold morning + hours on my feet = waterproof shoes every time.
And Then North Carolina Does What North Carolina Does…
By lunchtime, it’s a completely different day.
This is one of the hardest things about dressing for fall in North Carolina. You can leave the house in a jacket when it’s chilly, spend the morning walking around a sports tournament, and then find yourself peeling off layers because the afternoon feels more like summer.
That’s why I like keeping my footwear simple.
I don’t need to change shoes when the temperature changes.
My waterproof Oboz work for a cool morning, a warm afternoon, wet grass, dirt trails, and pretty much everything my kids can throw at me.
When I’m Actually Hiking
This is where a good hiking shoe really earns its keep.
If we’re walking a trail and come across a muddy section or a little stream, I don’t have to turn around because I’m wearing regular sneakers.
The waterproof construction helps keep my feet dry, while the hiking-style sole gives me the traction I want on uneven ground.
And because I have kids with me, I’m usually not moving at a leisurely adult hiking pace.
I’m stopping to look at something.
I’m helping someone across a stream.
I’m carrying someone’s water bottle.
I’m answering approximately 900 questions.
You know. Mom hiking.

What I Wear With My Waterproof Hiking Shoes
For a typical fall outdoor day, I keep the rest of my outfit pretty simple.
My Fall Outdoor Mom Uniform
👟 Waterproof hiking shoes
My Oboz are the foundation when I know I’ll be walking a lot or dealing with wet conditions.
👖 Comfortable outdoor pants or leggings
I want something that moves easily and can handle dirt, grass, and whatever else the day brings.
👕 Lightweight moisture-wicking top
Because “fall” doesn’t necessarily mean cool all day in North Carolina.
🧥 Lightweight layer
A fleece, vest, or lightweight jacket is easy to throw on for a chilly morning and remove later.
🧢 Sun protection
Even when it feels like fall, I’m still outside under the North Carolina sun.
Why I Love These Shoes for Outdoor Mom Life
The older I get, the less interested I am in wearing something just because it looks cute.
I want my clothes and shoes to work.
If I’m going to spend six hours standing at a sports tournament, I want comfortable shoes. If I’m walking through a pumpkin patch after a rainy week, I want shoes that can handle mud. If we’re hiking and cross a stream, I want my socks to stay dry. And if the morning starts at 45 degrees and the afternoon hits 75, I want footwear that doesn’t care.
That’s what these shoes have become for me: reliable outdoor shoes that let me participate in the day instead of thinking about my feet the entire time.
Why they’re in my fall rotation:
- 💧 Waterproof: Great for dewy grass, wet trails, and unexpected puddles.
- 🥾 Hiking-ready: Enough support and traction for actual trails.
- 🚶 Comfortable for walking: Perfect for long days at sports tournaments, festivals, and outdoor attractions.
- 🍂 Fall-friendly: They work whether the morning is chilly or the afternoon warms up.
- 👟 Versatile: Hiking, sports fields, pumpkin patches, parks—you name it.
- ⏳ Durable: I’ve been wearing my pair for about five years.

Looking for Comfortable Fall Shoes for Moms?
If you’re a mom who spends fall weekends outside, I would put a good waterproof hiking shoe pretty high on your list of outdoor essentials.
You don’t necessarily need a hardcore hiking boot. For the way I spend time outside with my kids, a low waterproof hiking shoe gives me the combination I’m looking for: comfort, support, traction, and dry feet without feeling like I’m wearing a giant hiking boot.
My Oboz have gotten me through wet soccer fields, long walks, trails, streams, and countless outdoor adventures with my kids—and after five years, they’re still one of the first pairs of shoes I reach for when I know we’re going to be outside all day.
Your feet are going to carry you through a lot of fall adventures. They deserve good shoes.
