Spring outdoor mom outfit for a day of walking at the cherry blossoms in North Carolina.(not pictured: my supportive walking sandals)
These track pants are my absolute favorite clothing item I own right now. These track pants are my absolute favorite clothing item I own right now. They’re from FP Movement, and I constantly scan ThredUp for the same style in a different pattern because the only way I’m likely to find another pair is secondhand. The lightweight breathable fabric is perfect for North Carolina days where the temperature can swing 30 degrees from sun up to sun down.
If you don’t like the weather in North Carolina, wait 20 minutes it’ll change.

Story
My son’s kindergarten field trip this past spring took us to an outdoor science museum close by one of the most beautiful gardens in our area—and we happened to be there on the peak day for cherry tree blossoms! Between exploring the museum, playing on the outdoor playground, and keeping up with a kindergarten class, we did a LOT of walking. I was especially glad I had prioritized a comfortable outdoor mom outfit that day because, after several hours on his field trip, my son had officially had enough walking. Naturally, that meant I carried him on my back for a good portion of the afternoon! It was exactly the kind of spring day that reminded me why comfortable walking sandals and practical clothes matter when you’re a mom spending hours outdoors with kids.
Today’s Outdoor Mom Outfit
Lightweight Outdoor Pants
FP Movement track pants — breathable enough for a warm afternoon but comfortable when North Carolina temperatures drop.
Comfortable Walking Sandals
Teva sandals — my go-to when I’m going to be walking and standing for hours.
Hands-Free Bag
Lightweight crossbody — because when your 6-year-old needs to be carried, you need both hands!

Shop Similar Styles on ThredUp
ThredUp is an online second-hand retailer that I’ve been shopping on for a few years. I’ve also used their free “clean-out kit” to sell things I no longer wear online too. It literally couldn’t be any easier. They handle everything – pictures, posting, pricing, etc and I just get a credit to my account when items sell.
“Our love for constant newness has come at too high a price for our planet. Shopping secondhand reduces the cost of fashion by giving new life to used clothes. Resale moves us one step closer to a circular fashion future.” – ThredUp
My trick for shopping ThredUp? Search smarter, not harder.
Instead of searching for the exact item I’m wearing, copy and paste the suggested search term below into ThredUp to find similar styles and brands currently available. Because ThredUp’s inventory is always changing, this gives you a better chance of finding something you love without having to scroll forever. Even better, you can set your preferred size and other filters, so ThredUp can automatically show you results that match your preferences—making it much easier to find your next favorite outdoor mom outfit.

I love this top, I have it in another color and just hit order on this white one!

Nothing is more helpful for an outdoor adventure when I end up carrying my 6YO on my back than a hands free lightweight bag – lol – keys, phone, wallet, check!

My go to supportive walking sandals – there are several of this exact same one on ThredUp right now but there are also several of all Teva styles. They don’t show up sorted by style usually so just search Teva Sandals.
Why I love this style of shopping for outdoor moms…
One of my favorite things about shopping secondhand for outdoor clothes is that I can spend less on the brands and styles I love—and then actually wear them like an outdoor mom is supposed to! I don’t worry nearly as much when my shorts get grass stains at the soccer field, my shirt gets splashed at the splash pad, or something eventually gets ripped because I’ve already saved money by buying it secondhand. For me, secondhand shopping makes it easier to build a comfortable, practical outdoor wardrobe without feeling like I have to keep everything looking brand new.
- 💰 Saves money: I can find brands I love for less than buying them new.
- 🌿 Made for real life: I don’t feel precious about clothes that are going to get dirty, sweaty, wet, or stained.
- 👟 Comfortable for walking: The right sandals and clothes make a huge difference when I’m on my feet for hours.
- ☀️ Practical for outdoor adventures: Breathable, lightweight pieces work for everything from field trips to playgrounds and gardens.
- ♻️ Gives clothes another life: Buying secondhand keeps perfectly good clothing in circulation instead of always buying new.
- 🧺 Easier to experiment: I can try a new brand or style without paying full price to see if it’s actually going to work for my busy mom life.
The Key to Any Outdoor Mom Outfit: Comfortable Walking Sandals
My favorite Teva Sandals full price are worth it, but the dopamine rush of finding a pair half price on ThredUp is hard to beat.
This is critical for me because my feet changed after pregnancy and these have proven to be a life saver for:
- arch support
- standing all day
- postpartum feet
- travel sports
- walking garden trails
- hot playground surfaces
- dry easily at splashpads
Why You Can Trust My Recommendation
Hi! I’m Sara, a North Carolina mom of three boys who spends weekends exploring trails, parks, splash pads, and outdoor adventures with my family. I didn’t come to this as a lifelong outdoors girl — I came to it the same way you might be: figuring it out one imperfect outing at a time.
💜 If today’s “adventure” is just getting everyone’s shoes on and making it to the mailbox and back, that counts. I hope this helps make your next outing feel a little less overwhelming and a lot more possible.
See you outside!
